Quick guide into keyboard profiles

There are a few things to take into account when configuring a keyboard. Even when you're just bying a different set of keycaps, the profile matters. This because it has a certain effect on you typing speed, comfort and just preference.

What are keyboard profiles

A profile of a keyboard or keycap set is like the blueprint of the caps. This defines the shape, height, length, angle, concave (fingertip-sized indent in the top) and row shape. these are are factors wich can change your keyboard experience.

CHERRY, SA and OEM are some of the more known profiles most people go for. As you can see, they are all quite different. Whether you are a typist, gamer programmer or just really into productivity and efficiency, the profile can have a big impact on your typing experience. Here are the 5 most popular types of profiles so you can find a personalised fit.

Profile name  Keycap Shape Height Row Shape
SA Angled  and concave High Profile Sculpted
OEM Angled Medium Profile  Sculpted
Cherry Angled Medium Profile Sculpted
XDA Concave Low Profile Uniform

SA

Lets just go down the list one by one. SA would be the highest profile featured in this blog, SA stands for Spherical All. They feature aa somewhat spherical design with rounder and concave tops. This gives the keycaps an aesthetically pleasing flow.

Why go for this profile? Here are the key features. (No pun intended)

Pros

  • High-profile
  • Aesthetic design
  • Solid keystrokes
  • Loads of space for customisation

Cons

  • Tall profiles can be uncomfortable
  • High-quality keycaps are a hard find
  • Not more practical than other profiles

OEM

OEM is one of the most popular profile choices. The reason for that will be that it is quite similar to the Cherry keycaps. The only difference between those two is the height of the upper two rows. If in doubt, go for these.

Pros

  • Almost identical to Cherry
  • Familiar typing experience
  • Cheaper than Cherry

Cons

  • Quality control can be tricky
  • Hard to find the one for you

Cherry

Everyone knows this one... right? The Cherry profile is always hit no miss. Since all Cherry profile keycaps have to be certified or manufactured by Cherry themselves. Sometimes the Cherry profile may be a bit lower than OEM, and the shape for the first row is a little bit flatter as well.

Pros

  • Popular profile
  • Quality controlled
  • Great brand support

Cons

  • More expensive than other profiles
  • Not alot of custom keycaps available

XDA

XDA is less known amongst the Mech world. It is a flat profile with concave keys. Best for fast typing and the aesthetic design

Pros

  • Visually pleasing look
  • Great typing experience
  • Everywhere available

Cons

  • Can be hard to find
